    About Showmanship

Showmanship at halter judges the exhibitor, not the horse, on their ability to present, groom, and show a horse in-hand. Precision footwork, sharp quarter turns, and flawless presentation make showmanship one of the most detail-oriented classes in western competition.

Showmanship patterns typically include walking, trotting, stopping, pivoting (quarter turns), setting up the horse for inspection, and backing. Exhibitors are scored on pattern accuracy, grooming and fitting of the horse, poise and confidence, and overall presentation. The handler's appearance, from hat to boots, is part of the evaluation. Showmanship is one of the best entry-level classes for young equestrians learning horsemanship fundamentals and ring presence.
