    About Equitation

Equitation classes judge the rider's position, effectiveness, and form rather than the horse. Popular in both hunter and jumper disciplines, equitation is the foundation of American junior and amateur competition, with prestigious finals like the ASPCA Maclay and USEF Medal.

Equitation is divided into flat and over-fences phases, with some classes requiring both. Riders are evaluated on their position, use of aids, and ability to get the best performance from their horse. The major equitation finals, Maclay, Medal, Washington Equitation Classic, and USHJA Hunterdon Cup, are season-end championships requiring qualifying points. These finals often feature challenging courses with unusual tests like counter-canter fences, halt-and-trot approaches, and hand gallop.
