Western Pleasure Competitions

About Western Pleasure

Western pleasure classes evaluate a horse's manners, way of going, and suitability as a pleasurable ride at the walk, jog, and lope. The ideal western pleasure horse moves with a smooth, relaxed cadence while remaining responsive to the rider's subtle cues.

Horses are shown in a group on the rail, performing walk, jog, and lope in both directions at the judge's call. Extended gaits may be requested. The ideal western pleasure horse has a level topline, natural head carriage, and ground-covering stride. Divisions include Youth, Amateur, Select Amateur, and Open, with breed-specific classes at AQHA, APHA, and ApHC shows. The AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City features the most competitive western pleasure classes in the country.
