    About Hunter Under Saddle

Hunter under saddle classes evaluate a horse's movement, manners, and suitability as a hunter-type mount on the flat, no jumps involved. Horses are shown at the walk, trot, and canter and judged on their quality of movement, expression, and way of going.

Unlike over-fences hunter classes, hunter under saddle is performed entirely on the flat. Horses travel on the rail in a group and are asked to walk, trot, canter, and hand gallop. Judges look for a long, low, ground-covering stride with a relaxed frame. The class is offered at AQHA, APHA, and USEF shows, and is a popular division for horses that excel at flatwork but may not jump. It bridges western and English disciplines, attracting crossover competitors.
