    About Hunter

Hunter competitions evaluate a horse's movement, manners, and way of going over fences. Judges assess smoothness, rhythm, and overall style, rewarding the horse that best exemplifies the ideal hunter type. Hunter classes are among the most popular in American equestrian sport.

Hunter divisions are organized by horse experience (Green, Regular Working), rider age and skill (Children's, Adult Amateur, Junior), and pony size. Courses typically feature eight to ten natural-colored fences set at heights from 2'6" to 4'. Riders are expected to demonstrate a quiet, effective riding style with smooth approaches and consistent pace. Major circuit finals include the USHJA International Hunter Derby, which adds a handy round testing bravery and adjustability.
