    About Trail

Trail classes test a horse's willingness and ability to navigate obstacles commonly found in arena settings, gates, bridges, water crossings, and ground poles. Judged on manners, responsiveness, and the quality of movement through each obstacle, trail is one of the most popular classes at breed shows.

A trail course includes at least six obstacles, with mandatory elements like a gate, logs, and a backing maneuver. Optional obstacles include bridges, water boxes, slickers, mailboxes, and side-pass poles. Each obstacle is scored individually, and the horse's attitude and willingness are key factors. Trail classes appear at AQHA, APHA, and ApHC shows, and the discipline has grown with the popularity of ranch versatility programs that value practical, real-world horsemanship skills.
