Ranch Riding Competitions

About Ranch Riding

Ranch riding evaluates a horse's suitability as a versatile working ranch mount, emphasizing a natural way of going with forward movement and smooth transitions. Unlike western pleasure, ranch riding rewards a purposeful, ground-covering stride that reflects real ranch work.

Ranch riding patterns include extended trot, working jog, lope, extended lope, stops, lead changes, and backing. Horses are judged on their willingness, responsiveness, and ability to perform transitions smoothly. The AQHA Ranch Riding class has become one of the fastest-growing events in breed showing, attracting riders who appreciate a more natural, functional style of western horsemanship compared to traditional rail classes.
