About Cutting
Cutting showcases a horse's natural 'cow sense', the ability to separate a single cow from a herd and prevent it from returning. Originating from ranch work, cutting has evolved into a major competitive discipline with millions in prize money at events sanctioned by the NCHA.
A cutting run lasts 2.5 minutes. The rider drives into the herd, selects a cow, and guides it to the center of the arena. Once the rider drops the reins, the horse works independently, mirroring the cow's movements. Two turnback riders and two herd holders assist. The NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth is the richest single event in western performance, with purses exceeding $5 million. Divisions include Non-Pro, Amateur, Youth, and Open.
Cutting riders can find cutting saddles and working cow horse tack on TurnoutHQ, or make use of TurnoutHQ community groups.
