About Mounted Shooting
Mounted shooting combines speed, marksmanship, and horsemanship as riders navigate timed courses on horseback while shooting balloon targets with single-action revolvers loaded with blank ammunition. It is one of the fastest-growing equestrian sports in America.
Competitors ride patterns at a gallop, engaging 10 balloon targets with .45-caliber single-action revolvers loaded with specially certified black powder blanks. Stages are designed with varying complexity, requiring lead changes, rollbacks, and precise shooting while maintaining control of the horse. The CMSA (Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association) and USMS (United States Mounted Shooting) are the primary governing bodies. Divisions include Men's, Women's, Youth, and Mounted Rifle classes. Safety is paramount, only blank ammunition is used.
Mounted Shooting riders can find western saddles and mounted shooting rigs on TurnoutHQ, or make use of TurnoutHQ community groups.
